The Spanish moss that curtains these passages predates the city itself, which was chartered in 1887 as a winter retreat for northern industrialists who arrived by rail and built estates along the lakefront. By the 1920s, Rollins College had anchored the northern shore, and the lakes became the defining feature of a town planned around water rather than streets. Today the Chain of Lakes remains the only navigable urban lake system in Central Florida, threading through residential neighborhoods, public parks, and the downtown corridor without a single dam or lock. The transparent kayak—a hull molded from polycarbonate rather than polyethylene—arrived in Winter Park in the early 2020s, turning the lakes' shallow margins into viewing platforms for submerged vegetation, nesting sunfish, and the occasional alligator cruising the thermocline.
